Summer Reading 2016

Swansea High Freshman Academy

Summer Reading Requirements

To:  English I (Rising Freshman) 2016

Summer reading is very important for you to do in order to maintain your current reading level and to increase your comprehension skills.  Whenever you read, whether you realize it or not, it helps you expand your vocabulary, write essays, understand texts, and communicate with others. Also, the more you read on a regular basis, the easier and more enjoyable it will become.  Reading regularly over the summer will also increase your success in all of your classes next year at Swansea High Freshman Academy.

We have chosen the following books, which are yours to keep:

  • Chew On This by Eric Schlosser

  • Wonder by R. J. Palacio

In addition to these books, we have also included some additional texts for students to read, which will supplement the above books.

As you read these books and other texts, we would like for you to think about the commonalities in themes, topics, conflicts, author’s style and literary devices. When you return to school in August, we will begin a PBL opportunity centered around your summer reading books and texts, and we will have a Summer Reading Celebration at school for those who complete their reading!

Finally, for each book, please complete one Dialetical Journal sheet (6 entries each).  This will help you stay focused on and engaged with the books as you read.

We hope you enjoy your SHFA backpack and we truly look forward to next year! We hope you have a wonderful summer and are ready to discuss these books and readings when you enter Swansea High Freshman Academy in August.

Sincerely,

   Ms. Laura Liger
